Filmlabs evening : LABO BxL & L’Abominable Navire Argo

Projection

Screenings at Nova cinema

17.02.2024

There are eco-utopian places that deserve to be known. These are filmmakers’ laboratories. In these shared, self-managed spaces, artists work with photochemical film, more commonly known as pellicule. They perpetuate a pioneering cinema craft, much more tactile than digital technology, whose medium, in order to exist, must allow itself to be penetrated by chemistry and crossed by light. These places of artistic experimentation, knowledge exchange and collective operation are activating a new ecological consciousness.

– LABO BxL, a Brussels-based organisation, has been working collectively for almost 20 years, not only making films but also giving introductory workshops, training in different techniques and taking part in university research. Today, like many other alternative entities, LABO BxL is under pressure from the property market. Its members are having to look for new premises, forced to leave the workshops they have occupied for the past 10 years. This evening is dedicated to them.

L’Abominable. To cross-fertilise experiences and nurture the perspectives of LABO BxL, we will be welcoming L’Abominable, a Parisian lab with 400 films to its credit. Currently embarked on a relocation project called Navire Argo, it is moving into the former Eclair industrial laboratories in Epinay sur Seine in the Paris region. A 1,500 m2 space for film, financed for the most part by the public authorities, is due to open shortly.

– The evening will provide an opportunity to show films made at L’Abominable and LABO BxL, and to hear from the filmmakers present about why, despite the ‘all-digital’ standard, some artists, including some of the youngest, are still interested in the photochemical medium. The event will close with the screening of a Berlinale award-winning feature film directed by Camilo Restrepo, a member of L’Abominable.
